1954年、東京・目白にあった自宅の庭で大山倍達が空手の稽古をしていると、自然に近所の子供たちや噂を聞きつけた人が集まって道場のような形になった。この頃の弟子が、待田京介、安田英治、黒崎健時、水島健二、石橋雅史らである。
